Migrate Simple Goods to Shopify: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

A Comprehensive Guide to Transitioning from Simple Goods to Shopify

As your e-commerce business grows, the need for a more robust, scalable, and feature-rich platform often arises. Migrating your online store from Simple Goods to Shopify can unlock significant potential, offering enhanced capabilities for sales, marketing, and overall store management. Shopify is renowned for its user-friendly interface, extensive app ecosystem, and powerful e-commerce tools, making it an excellent choice for merchants looking to expand.

This detailed guide will walk you through the entire process of moving your valuable store data — including products, customer records, and order history — from Simple Goods to Shopify. Since Simple Goods is not directly integrated with standard migration tools, we will facilitate this transition using a CSV file export/import method, ensuring a smooth and accurate data transfer.

    Prerequisites for a Successful Migration

Before initiating your store replatforming, it’s crucial to lay the groundwork for a seamless transition. Careful preparation on both your source (Simple Goods) and target (Shopify) stores will prevent common issues and ensure data integrity.

    • Backup Your Simple Goods Data: Always create a complete backup of your Simple Goods store data. This includes all product information, customer lists, order histories, and any custom content. This serves as a safety net in case of unforeseen circumstances.
    • Export Simple Goods Data to CSV: Prepare your Simple Goods data for export into CSV (Comma Separated Values) files. You will need to export key entities such as Products, Categories, Customers, and Orders. Ensure your CSV files are well-organized and conform to a standard structure for easier mapping. Learn more about CSV.File Data Migration.
    • Set Up Your Shopify Store:
      • Create a New Shopify Account: If you don't already have one, sign up for a new Shopify store. Choose a plan that best suits your business needs. Important Notice: Be aware that the "Pause and Build" plan on Shopify blocks orders, so ensure your plan supports live transactions when you go live.
      • Install Cart2Cart Store Migration App: To facilitate the migration of your CSV data into Shopify, you will need the Cart2Cart Store Migration App from the Shopify App Store. This app is required for connecting your Shopify store as the target platform.
      • Disable Notifications: For a smoother data transfer, it is highly recommended to disable customer notifications in your Shopify store settings temporarily. This prevents customers from receiving premature or duplicate emails during the migration process.
    • Review Supported Entities: Understand which data entities can be migrated. From your CSV files and into Shopify, you can typically transfer: Products, Product Categories, Product Reviews (often requiring a separate app like AirReviews on Shopify), Customers, Orders, CMS Pages, Gift Cards, Coupons, Price Rules, Blogs, and Blog Posts.
    • Familiarize Yourself with Shopify: Take some time to explore the Shopify admin panel, understand its structure, and identify where your migrated data will reside. This proactive step helps you verify the migration more effectively. For additional preparation tips, refer to our guide on preparing your source store and guide on preparing your target store.

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

This section outlines the precise steps to transition your e-commerce store from Simple Goods (via CSV) to Shopify using a migration wizard.

Step 1: Get Started with the Migration Wizard

Begin by accessing the migration tool. You'll typically start by choosing to perform a self-service migration.

Step 2: Configure Your Simple Goods (CSV) Source Store

Since Simple Goods does not offer direct API integration with migration tools, your data will be transferred via CSV files. This process involves selecting 'CSV File to Cart' as your source platform and uploading the prepared data.

    1. Select Source Platform: In the migration wizard, choose "CsvToCart" from the list of supported platforms.
    2. Upload CSV Files: Upload your previously exported CSV files containing products, categories, customers, orders, and any other data you wish to migrate from Simple Goods. The wizard will prompt you to match the file types.

Step 3: Connect Your Shopify Target Store

Next, you will connect your new Shopify store where all your Simple Goods data will be transferred.

    1. Select Target Platform: Choose "Shopify" as your target e-commerce platform.
    2. Choose Connection Method: The recommended method is to "Install App from Marketplace". Click the provided link to navigate to the Shopify App Store, install the Cart2Cart Store Migration App, and then return to the migration wizard to complete the connection. Alternatively, you can provide API access credentials, though the app method is generally simpler for most users. Refer to The Short & Essential Guide to Access Credentials for Cart2Cart if using API.

Step 4: Select Entities and Additional Options

This is where you define exactly what data you want to move and how it should be handled on your new Shopify store.

    1. Choose Data Entities: Select the specific data types (entities) you wish to migrate from your CSV files to Shopify. This includes Products, Customers, Orders, Categories, Blogs, CMS Pages, and more. You can select all or pick individual items. Remember that Product Reviews on Shopify typically require a third-party app like AirReviews.

    1. Configure Additional Options: Enhance your migration by choosing various additional options:
      • "Clear Target Store Data": This option removes all existing data from your Shopify store before migration. Be cautious if you have already added new content. Learn more about clearing target store data.
      • "Preserve Order IDs": Maintain your original order numbering on Shopify. This can be crucial for accounting and record-keeping. Find out more about how Preserve IDs options work.
      • "Migrate Images in Description": Ensures product descriptions and other text content that include images are transferred correctly.
      • "Create 301 SEO URLs": Essential for maintaining your search engine rankings, this option automatically creates redirects from your old Simple Goods URLs to the new Shopify ones, preserving link equity.
      • Other options may include migrating customer passwords, SEO URLs, and more.

    Step 5: Map Data Fields

Data mapping is a critical step to ensure that information from your Simple Goods CSV files aligns perfectly with the corresponding fields in Shopify. You'll typically map customer groups, order statuses, product attributes (like colors, sizes), and any custom fields.

    • Customer Groups Mapping: Match customer roles from your CSV (e.g., "Wholesale Customer") to their equivalents in Shopify (e.g., by using customer tags).
    • Order Statuses Mapping: Align the statuses of your orders (e.g., "Pending," "Processing," "Completed") from your CSV to Shopify's order statuses.
    • Product Attributes Mapping: If your products have custom attributes or variants, ensure they are correctly mapped to Shopify's product options and variants.

Step 6: Run a Free Demo Migration (Optional but Recommended)

Before committing to a full data transfer, perform a free demo migration. This moves a limited number of entities (e.g., 10-20 products, customers, orders) to your Shopify store, allowing you to:

    • Verify Data Accuracy: Check if products, customers, and orders are transferred correctly and display as expected.
    • Understand the Process: Gain insights into how the full migration will proceed and identify any potential issues early.
    • Test Functionality: Confirm that basic store functionalities work with the migrated data.

Step 7: Launch Your Full Migration

Once you are satisfied with the demo results, proceed with the full migration. This step will transfer all selected data from your Simple Goods CSV files to your Shopify store.

    • Review & Confirm: Double-check all your selections, including entities and additional options, and the total cost.
    • Consider Migration Insurance: For peace of mind, especially with large or complex migrations, consider adding Migration Insurance Service. This service typically allows for multiple remigrations within a set period, which can be invaluable if you discover any data inconsistencies post-migration. Learn more about how Migration Insurance works.
    • Initiate Migration: Click the button to start the full data transfer. You'll receive updates on its progress.

    Post-Migration Steps

After your data has successfully been transferred to Shopify, there are several crucial post-migration tasks to complete to ensure your new store is fully operational, optimized, and ready for customers.

    • Verify All Migrated Data: Rigorously check your Shopify store. Ensure that all products, categories, customer accounts, and order histories are present and display correctly. Pay special attention to product variants, SKUs, pricing, images, and descriptions. Check for data integrity.
    • Install Essential Apps: Leverage Shopify's extensive App Store. Install apps for reviews (e.g., AirReviews if you migrated reviews), marketing, accounting, shipping, and other functionalities that enhance your store's capabilities and user experience.
    • Configure Payment Gateways & Shipping: Set up your preferred payment methods (Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe, etc.) and configure your shipping zones, rates, and carriers.
    • Update DNS Records: Point your domain name to your new Shopify store. This step makes your Shopify store live and accessible to customers under your existing domain.
    • Implement 301 Redirects: If you did not enable the automatic 301 redirect option during migration or have custom URLs that need redirection, set up manual 301 redirects to preserve your SEO rankings and link equity. This prevents broken links and ensures a smooth transition for visitors and search engines.
    • Test Store Functionality: Conduct thorough tests of your entire store. Perform test purchases, try out different payment methods, check shipping calculations, submit contact forms, and ensure all navigation and search functions work flawlessly.
    • Review SEO Settings: Verify that product titles, meta descriptions, and URLs are optimized for search engines. Ensure that any custom meta data has been transferred or re-entered.
    • Communicate with Customers: Inform your customers about the store transition, highlighting any new features or improvements. This helps manage expectations and maintain customer loyalty.
    • Monitor & Optimize: Keep a close eye on your website's performance, traffic, and sales in the initial weeks post-migration. Use analytics tools to identify any issues and optimize for better performance.
    • Consider Recent Data Migration: If there was a period of active sales on your Simple Goods store during or immediately after the migration, consider a Recent Data Migration Service to transfer any new orders or customers that came in after your initial data export.

By following these steps, you can confidently migrate your e-commerce store from Simple Goods (via CSV) to Shopify, setting the stage for future growth and success. If you encounter any challenges or require assistance, do not hesitate to Contact Us or refer to our Frequently Asked Questions.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
