I’ve performed migration but my custom fields are not visible. Why is that so?

Why Aren't My Custom Fields Visible After Data Migration?

Often, after a data migration, custom fields might not be immediately visible on your store's front end. This is usually due to the template configurations of your new eCommerce platform.

Here's why this happens and how to fix it:

Template Configuration Issues

Your store's theme or template controls how information is displayed. Custom fields, being additions to the standard data structure, often require specific instructions within the template to be rendered correctly. Without these instructions, the data exists in your database, but the theme doesn't know how to show it.

How to Resolve Visibility Issues

  1. Access Your Admin Panel: Log in to the administration area of your eCommerce platform (e.g., Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce, etc.).
  2. Locate Template Settings: Navigate to the section that manages your store's theme or template. The exact location varies depending on the platform. Look for options like "Theme Editor," "Template Settings," "Customize," or similar.
  3. Edit Template Files (If Necessary): Some platforms allow direct editing of template files. If your platform offers this, you may need to modify the relevant template files (e.g., product.liquid in Shopify, catalog/product/view.phtml in Magento) to include code that displays the custom fields. This typically involves adding code snippets that fetch and display the custom field's value. Caution: Back up your template files before making any changes.
  4. Use Theme Customization Options: Many modern themes offer built-in options to display custom fields. Explore the theme's settings to see if there are dedicated controls for managing custom field visibility.
  5. Consult Theme Documentation: Refer to the documentation for your specific theme or template. It may provide instructions on how to display custom fields or other advanced features.
  6. Consider a Plugin/Extension: Some eCommerce platforms have plugins or extensions specifically designed to manage and display custom fields. These can simplify the process and avoid the need for manual code editing.
  7. Clear Cache: After making changes, clear your store's cache to ensure the updated template is loaded.
