Migrating from eComchain to Shopify: A Comprehensive How-To Guide

A Comprehensive Guide to Transitioning from eComchain to Shopify

For e-commerce merchants seeking to enhance their store's capabilities, scalability, and market reach, migrating to a platform like Shopify often becomes a strategic imperative. If you're currently operating on eComchain and considering a move, this detailed guide will walk you through the essential steps to perform a successful data transfer to Shopify. We'll leverage a robust migration tool to ensure your products, customers, orders, and other crucial data entities are moved with precision and integrity, setting your business up for future growth.

Given that eComchain typically requires a data export in CSV format for migration to third-party tools, we will guide you through the process of preparing your eComchain data and then utilizing a migration wizard that supports CSV file imports as your source, with Shopify as your target platform.

Prerequisites for a Smooth Migration

Before initiating the data migration process, thorough preparation of both your source eComchain store and your target Shopify store is crucial. This foundational work will help minimize potential issues and ensure a seamless transition.

Preparing Your Source eComchain Store

  • Data Export: Your primary task will be to export all essential data from your eComchain store into CSV files. This includes, but is not limited to, products (with variations, images, and descriptions), product categories, customer records, order histories, product reviews, and any CMS pages or blog posts you wish to transfer. Ensure these exports are as comprehensive as possible.
  • Data Cleanup: Take this opportunity to clean up redundant, outdated, or erroneous data in your eComchain exports. Removing unnecessary information will streamline the migration and improve your new store's data quality.
  • Backup Your Store: Always create a full backup of your eComchain store's database and files before any major operation like a data migration. This serves as a critical safety net.
  • Review Source Data: Familiarize yourself with the structure of your exported CSV files. Understanding how your data is organized will be invaluable during the data mapping phase.
  • For more detailed insights on preparing your source store, refer to our guide on How to prepare Source store for migration?

Preparing Your Target Shopify Store

  • Set Up Your Shopify Account: If you haven't already, sign up for a Shopify account. Choose an appropriate plan that aligns with your business needs. Be aware that the 'Pause and Build' plan blocks orders, so ensure you are on an active plan during and after the migration.
  • Install Cart2Cart Store Migration App: Shopify requires the installation of the Cart2Cart Store Migration App from the Shopify App Store to facilitate the connection and data transfer.
  • Disable Notifications: It's highly recommended to disable all customer notifications on your Shopify store during the migration to prevent your customers from receiving confusing or premature emails about products, orders, or accounts.
  • Install Review App (If Needed): If you plan to migrate product reviews, you will need an app like 'AirReviews' installed on Shopify, as reviews often require specific app integration to display correctly.
  • Basic Store Configuration: Set up your basic Shopify store settings such as currency, shipping zones, and tax rates. These can be refined later, but having a foundational setup helps.
  • For a complete checklist on preparing your target store, consult How to prepare Target store for migration?

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

With your preparations complete, let's dive into the step-by-step process of migrating your eComchain data to Shopify using a migration wizard.

Step 1: Initiate Your Migration

Begin by logging into your chosen migration service account. From the dashboard, you will typically find an option to start a new migration. Click this to launch the migration wizard.

Step 2: Connect Your Source eComchain Store (via CSV File)

In the migration wizard, you'll be prompted to select your source shopping cart. Since eComchain requires data export, you will select 'CSV File to Cart' as your source platform from the dropdown menu.

After selecting 'CSV File to Cart', you will upload the exported CSV files containing your eComchain data. The wizard will guide you to upload separate files for products, customers, orders, categories, and other entities. Ensure all relevant data files are uploaded correctly for a comprehensive data transfer.

Step 3: Connect Your Target Shopify Store

Next, you will configure your target store. Select 'Shopify' from the list of available e-commerce platforms. You will then be presented with options to connect your Shopify store.

The recommended method is to use the 'Install App from Marketplace' option. This will direct you to the Shopify App Store to install the Cart2Cart Store Migration App. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the app and grant the necessary permissions. Once installed, return to the migration wizard, and the connection should be established automatically.

Alternatively, you can choose to 'Provide API Access Credentials'. This method requires you to generate an Admin API access token within your Shopify admin panel. For detailed instructions on how to obtain these credentials, please refer to The Short & Essential Guide to Access Credentials for Cart2Cart.

Step 4: Select Data Entities for Migration

This critical step allows you to choose exactly which data types (entities) you wish to transfer from your eComchain CSV files to your new Shopify store. You can select specific items or opt to migrate all available entities.

Common entities you'll want to migrate include:

  • Products: Including product details, images, variants, and SKUs.
  • Products Categories: The organizational structure for your product catalog.
  • Customers: Customer accounts, billing, and shipping addresses.
  • Orders: Complete order histories with associated customer data.
  • Products Reviews: Customer feedback and ratings for your products.
  • CMS Pages: Static content pages like 'About Us' or 'Contact Us'.
  • Blogs and Blog Posts: Your content marketing assets.
  • Additionally, you might transfer coupons, invoices (as part of orders), and other relevant data depending on your CSV export capabilities and Shopify's supported entities.

Step 5: Configure Additional Migration Options & Map Data

This is where you fine-tune your migration to meet specific business needs and ensure data integrity.

Additional Options:

Review the list of additional options and select those relevant to your migration:

  • Clear Target Store Data: This option will remove all existing data on your Shopify store before the migration. Use with caution, especially if you have manually added any data. Learn more about Clear current data on Target store before migration option.
  • Preserve Order IDs: Maintain your original order numbering sequence on Shopify. Explore How Preserve IDs options can be used? for more details.
  • Migrate Images in Description: Ensure product and category images embedded within descriptions are transferred correctly.
  • Create 301 SEO URLs: This is crucial for maintaining your search engine rankings and link equity. It automatically creates redirects from your old eComchain URLs to your new Shopify URLs, preventing broken links.
  • Other options might include migrating customer passwords (if supported by your CSV export and Shopify's API), preserving product IDs, or adjusting short descriptions.

Data Mapping:

The wizard will guide you through the data mapping process, which is particularly important when migrating from CSV files. You will need to match customer groups, order statuses, and potentially other attributes from your eComchain (CSV) data to their corresponding fields in Shopify. This ensures that your customer roles (e.g., 'Wholesale' to 'Customer Tag') and order states (e.g., 'Processing' to 'Fulfilled') are correctly translated.

Step 6: Run Free Demo & Full Migration

Before committing to the full data transfer, it's highly recommended to perform a Free Demo Migration. This transfers a limited number of entities (e.g., 10 products, 10 customers, 10 orders) to your Shopify store. This demo allows you to:

  • Verify the connection between the platforms.
  • Check the accuracy of data transfer and mapping.
  • Identify any potential issues or adjustments needed before the full migration.

Once you are satisfied with the results of the demo migration, you can proceed with the full migration. During this final step, you can also consider adding a Migration Insurance Service, which provides a set number of re-migrations within a specific period, offering peace of mind. Learn more about How Migration Insurance works?.

Post-Migration Steps to Finalize Your Shopify Store

Completing the data transfer is a major milestone, but it's not the final step. Several crucial post-migration tasks are necessary to ensure your new Shopify store is fully operational, optimized, and ready for customers.

  • Thorough Data Review: Scrutinize all migrated data. Check product details, images, pricing, inventory levels, customer accounts, and order histories for accuracy. Pay special attention to URLs and SEO data.
  • Configure Shopify Settings: Set up your shipping rates, tax settings, payment gateways, and any other specific configurations required for your business operations.
  • Design and Theme Customization: Customize your Shopify theme to align with your brand's aesthetics and provide an optimal user experience. Ensure all branding elements, images, and content are correctly displayed.
  • Set Up 301 Redirects: If you opted to create 301 redirects during migration, verify their functionality. If not, manually set up 301 redirects for any critical old eComchain URLs that were not automatically mapped to preserve your SEO rankings and prevent broken links.
  • Install and Configure Apps: Integrate essential Shopify apps for marketing, SEO, customer service, dropshipping, or any other functionalities your business requires. Remember, reviews often need a dedicated app (like AirReviews) to display correctly.
  • Extensive Testing: Conduct comprehensive testing of your entire store. This includes testing the checkout process, customer account creation, product searches, contact forms, and all payment methods to ensure a flawless shopping experience.
  • Update DNS Settings: Once you are confident your Shopify store is fully functional, update your domain's DNS settings to point to your new Shopify store. This is the moment your new store goes live.
  • SEO Optimization: Continue optimizing your store for search engines. This includes reviewing meta descriptions, title tags, image alt text, and creating fresh, engaging content.
  • Consider Recent Data Migration: If new orders or customer data appeared on your eComchain store after your main migration, consider using a Recent Data Migration Service to transfer only the latest updates.
  • Decommission Old Store: Once your Shopify store is live and stable, and you've confirmed all data is correctly transferred and functional, you can safely decommission your old eComchain store.

By following these steps, you can confidently transition your e-commerce business from eComchain to Shopify, unlocking new opportunities for growth and efficiency. Should you encounter any challenges, remember that expert assistance and various migration services are available to ensure your success.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
