Seamless Migration: Moving Your E-commerce Store from Wundery to Shopify

A Comprehensive Guide to Transitioning from Wundery to Shopify

Migrating your e-commerce store is a pivotal step in expanding your online business capabilities. If you're currently operating on Wundery and looking to elevate your digital presence with Shopify's robust platform, this expert guide is designed to provide you with clear, actionable steps for a seamless data transfer. Shopify offers a powerful, scalable, and user-friendly environment perfect for modern merchants, bringing enhanced features for product management, customer engagement, marketing, and overall store performance.

Given that Wundery is a platform that typically requires data export via files, our migration strategy will leverage CSV (Comma Separated Values) files as the primary method for moving your valuable store data. This ensures that all your critical information, from product SKUs and customer data to order history and marketing assets, makes a smooth transition to your new Shopify storefront.

Prerequisites for Migration

Before embarking on your migration journey, proper preparation is key to ensuring data integrity and minimizing downtime. Here’s what you need to get ready:

  • Wundery Store Preparation (Source): As Wundery data will be exported via CSV, ensure you have access to your Wundery admin panel to export all relevant data. This includes:
    • Products: Listings, variants, images, descriptions, SKUs, pricing.
    • Product Categories: Your store's organizational structure.
    • Customers: Customer records, including names, addresses, and contact information.
    • Orders: Complete order history, statuses, and associated customer details.
    • CMS Pages & Blog Posts: Any static content, informational pages, and blog articles.
    • Coupons: Existing discount codes and promotions.
    • Reviews: If your Wundery store supports reviews, export these as well.

Consolidate these into well-structured CSV files. For more details on preparing your source store, refer to our How to prepare Source store for migration? guide.

  • Shopify Store Setup (Target):
    • Create Your Shopify Store: If you haven't already, sign up for a new Shopify account. You can explore different plans, but be aware that the "Pause and Build" plan can block order processing, so plan accordingly.
    • Install Cart2Cart App: Shopify requires the installation of the Cart2Cart Store Migration App to facilitate the connection and data transfer.
    • Disable Notifications: It's highly recommended to disable email notifications in your Shopify store settings during the migration to avoid sending incomplete data alerts to your customers.
    • Review Country Restrictions: Be aware of any potential country restrictions that might apply to orders in Shopify, which could impact your imported order data.
    • Consider Reviews App: Shopify doesn't natively support importing reviews in the same way. If migrating reviews is crucial, you will likely need to install a third-party app like AirReviews or a similar solution on Shopify before migration.
    • Backup Existing Shopify Data (If Any): If your Shopify store already contains data, and you plan to clear it before migration, ensure you have a backup. For more on target store preparation, visit How to prepare Target store for migration?.
  • General Preparations:
    • Audit Your Data: Clean up unnecessary or outdated data on Wundery before export to ensure a leaner, more efficient migration.
    • Inform Stakeholders: Communicate the planned migration to your team and, if necessary, to your customers to manage expectations.
    • Understand Benefits: Familiarize yourself with what are the potential benefits of a website migration?.

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

With your preparations complete, let's walk through the migration wizard process to move your Wundery data to Shopify.

Step 1: Start Your Migration

Begin by navigating to the migration wizard. Here, you'll choose to start a do-it-yourself migration, or explore assisted services if you prefer a guided approach.

Step 2: Connect Your Wundery Store (Source)

This is where you'll tell the migration tool about your current Wundery store. Since Wundery is not a directly integrated platform, you will select 'CsvToCart' as your Source Cart type. You will then upload the CSV files containing your exported Wundery data for Products, Customers, Orders, Categories, and other entities.

Ensure your CSV files are well-formatted. For assistance with CSV data, consider our CSV.File Data Migration service. The system will process your files and identify the various data entities available for transfer.

Step 3: Connect Your Shopify Store (Target)

Next, you'll configure your new Shopify store as the target for your data. Select 'Shopify' from the dropdown list of target platforms. Enter your Shopify store's URL. The recommended connection method is to install the Cart2Cart app directly from the Shopify marketplace, which simplifies the authentication process.

Alternatively, you can provide API access credentials. This involves creating a custom app within your Shopify admin, configuring the necessary API scopes, and obtaining an Admin API access token. For guidance on API credentials, read The Short & Essential Guide to Access Credentials for Cart2Cart.

Step 4: Select Data Entities to Migrate

In this crucial step, you choose exactly which types of data you want to transfer from your Wundery CSV files to Shopify. You can select all entities or pick them individually. Supported entities typically include:

  • Products (including SKUs and variants)
  • Product Categories
  • Customers
  • Orders
  • CMS Pages
  • Blogs & Blog Posts
  • Coupons
  • Gift Cards (if applicable)
  • Price Rules (if applicable)

Remember the Shopify limitation regarding reviews; if you selected reviews for migration, ensure you have an appropriate reviews app installed on Shopify to receive them.

Step 5: Configure Data Mapping

Data mapping ensures that fields from your Wundery CSVs correctly align with the corresponding fields in Shopify. This step is vital for maintaining data integrity and consistency across your new platform. You'll typically map:

  • Customer groups (e.g., 'Wholesale' customers to Shopify customer tags)
  • Order statuses (e.g., 'Pending' from Wundery to 'Pending payment' in Shopify)
  • Product attributes, and other custom fields.

Step 6: Choose Additional Migration Options

This step allows you to select various optional features to tailor your migration. These options can significantly impact your store's functionality and SEO post-migration:

  • Preserve Order IDs: Maintain your existing order numbering system for historical consistency. See How Preserve IDs options can be used?.
  • Create 301 Redirects: Essential for SEO, this option creates automatic redirects from your old Wundery URLs to your new Shopify URLs, preserving link equity and preventing broken links. This is critical for maintaining your SEO rankings.
  • Migrate Images in Description: Ensures that all product images embedded within descriptions are also transferred.
  • Clear Target Store Data: If your Shopify store already has demo content or previous data, this option removes it before migration. Understand its implications: Clear current data on Target store before migration option.
  • Migrate Categories to Tags / Concat Short Description: Specific options for how certain data types are handled on Shopify.

Step 7: Launch Your Full Migration

After configuring all settings, you'll be presented with a summary of your migration. It's often recommended to perform a free demo migration first, which transfers a limited number of entities, allowing you to preview the results and ensure everything is configured correctly. Once satisfied, you can proceed with the full migration.

You'll also have the option to add Migration Insurance Service, which provides multiple remigrations within a certain period, offering peace of mind. Learn more about How Migration Insurance works?.

Post-Migration Steps

Your data has now been transferred to Shopify, but the journey isn't quite over. These post-migration steps are crucial for a successful launch:

  • Thorough Testing: Systematically test every aspect of your new Shopify store. Check product pages, add items to the cart, complete a test order, verify customer accounts, ensure all links work, and confirm images are displaying correctly. Test search functionality and responsiveness across devices.
  • Configure Store Settings:
    • Payment Gateways: Set up your preferred payment processors (e.g., Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe).
    • Shipping Zones & Rates: Define your shipping rules and regions.
    • Taxes: Configure your tax settings according to your business location and legal requirements.
    • Email Notifications: Re-enable all necessary customer notifications.
  • Theme & Design: Customize your Shopify theme to match your brand identity and ensure an excellent user experience.
  • App Integration: Install any necessary Shopify apps for SEO, marketing, customer support, or other functionalities (e.g., the AirReviews app for your migrated reviews).
  • Update DNS Records: Once you're fully confident in your new Shopify store, update your domain's DNS records to point to Shopify. This is the moment your new store goes live.
  • Implement 301 Redirects: Even with automated redirects, manually review and add any critical 301 redirects for specific pages that might have been missed or changed during the replatforming, to maintain your SEO rankings and link equity.
  • SEO Optimization: Review and optimize your meta titles, descriptions, image alt tags, and create an XML sitemap for your new Shopify store.
  • Monitor & Analyze: Keep a close eye on your store's performance, traffic, and sales. Use Shopify's analytics and Google Analytics to monitor user behavior.
  • Consider Future Migrations: For any new data or updates that occur on your old Wundery store after the initial migration, consider using a Recent Data Migration Service to keep your Shopify store current.

By following these steps, you can ensure a successful and stress-free transition from Wundery to Shopify, paving the way for your e-commerce business to thrive on a more powerful platform.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

I feel much more confident now with my decision to use Cart2Cart to do the data migration from my existing website to Shopify. I was recommended to Cart2Cart for Shopify Migration by a trusted friend and I will definitely recommend them also to anyone looking to migrate. Moving website providers has been a source of stress for me and at least this is one less thing to worry about.

I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
