The Definitive Guide to Migrating Your Modified eCommerce Store to Shopify

Seamlessly Transition Your Modified eCommerce Store to Shopify

Are you running an online business on a modified eCommerce platform and considering a move to a more robust, scalable, and user-friendly solution? Migrating your store to Shopify can unlock a world of possibilities, from enhanced features and integrations to improved performance and a streamlined merchant experience. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the entire process of replatforming your modified eCommerce store to Shopify, ensuring a smooth and successful data transfer.

Given that 'modified eCommerce' often refers to a highly customized or older platform, direct API connections might not always be available. For such scenarios, the most reliable and efficient method for data transfer is typically via CSV file export from your current store and subsequent import into the migration tool. This article will detail how to leverage this CSV-based approach to migrate your essential store data to Shopify.

Prerequisites for a Successful Migration

Before initiating the migration process, it's crucial to prepare both your existing modified eCommerce store and your new Shopify environment. Thoughtful preparation minimizes downtime, prevents data loss, and ensures a seamless transition.

  • For Your Modified eCommerce Store (CSV Export):
    • Data Export Access: Ensure you have full administrative or database access to your modified eCommerce platform to export all necessary data into CSV files. This includes products (with SKUs, variants, images, descriptions), customer details, order history, categories, and reviews.
    • Data Review: Take this opportunity to clean up old, irrelevant, or duplicate data. A cleaner dataset will lead to a more efficient migration.
    • Backup: Always create a complete backup of your modified eCommerce store's database and files before attempting any data export. This is a critical step for data integrity.
    • CSV File Preparation: You will need to export your store data into well-structured CSV files. While the specific format may vary, ensure columns are clearly defined for entities like products, customers, and orders. Consider how to export product variants, images, and other complex data points. For more details on preparing your source store, read our guide on How to prepare Source store for migration?
  • For Your Shopify Store:
    • Shopify Store Setup: Create a new Shopify account or ensure you have an active Shopify store (Basic Shopify, Shopify, Advanced Shopify, Shopify Plus, or even a trial version will work). Note that a 'Pause and Build' plan on Shopify may block new orders, which is something to consider during the migration period.
    • Install Cart2Cart App: For a straightforward migration, the Cart2Cart Store Migration App is required and recommended for connecting your Shopify target store.
    • Disable Notifications: Temporarily disable customer notifications on your Shopify store to avoid sending automated emails during the data import process, especially for historical orders or customer sign-ups.
    • Review Apps for Reviews: Shopify requires an app like AirReviews to support product reviews. If migrating reviews, be prepared to install a compatible app on your Shopify store post-migration.
    • Target Store Preparation: For further insights into preparing your target store, refer to our How to prepare Target store for migration? FAQ.
  • General Prerequisites:
    • Inform Customers (Optional): If you anticipate significant downtime, consider informing your customers about the upcoming migration.
    • Review FAQs: Familiarize yourself with our Frequently Asked Questions to address common concerns.

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

Utilizing a specialized migration wizard streamlines the process, ensuring accuracy and minimizing manual effort. Follow these steps for a successful transfer.

Step 1: Start Your Migration

Begin by navigating to the migration wizard. This initial screen allows you to choose between a do-it-yourself migration or requesting assisted service.

Select the option to start a new migration to proceed with the wizard.

Step 2: Connect Your Source Store (Modified eCommerce via CSV)

In this crucial step, you'll configure your source store, which is your modified eCommerce platform. Since direct connectors for highly customized or older platforms may be limited, you will select the 'CSV File to Cart' option.

Choose 'CSV File to Cart' from the dropdown list of supported carts. You will then be prompted to upload your prepared CSV files containing your store data. The wizard supports various entities for CSV migration including Products, Product Categories, Product Manufacturers, Product Reviews, Customers, Orders, Invoices, Taxes, Stores, Coupons, CMS Pages, Blogs, and Blog Posts. You can utilize source options such as Preserve Category IDs, Preserve Product IDs, Preserve Customers IDs, Preserve Orders IDs, Create Variants from Attributes, SEO URLs, Migrate Images in Description, and Password Migration for granular control over the data transfer. For specialized assistance with CSV files, consider our CSV.File Data Migration service.

Step 3: Connect Your Target Store (Shopify)

Next, you'll connect your new Shopify store. This step establishes the link where all your data will be transferred.

From the dropdown menu, select 'Shopify' as your target platform. The recommended connection method is to 'Install App from Marketplace'. Click the provided link to be redirected to the Shopify App Store, install the Cart2Cart Store Migration App, and then return to the wizard. Alternatively, if preferred, you can choose to provide API access credentials, as detailed in The Short & Essential Guide to Access Credentials for Cart2Cart.

Step 4: Select Data Entities for Migration

This stage allows you to specify exactly which data elements you wish to transfer from your modified eCommerce CSV files to Shopify. Review the list carefully to ensure all vital information is selected.

You can choose to migrate 'All entities' with a single click, or selectively pick specific data types such as Products, Product Categories, Reviews, Customers, Orders, CMS Pages, Gift Cards, Coupons, Price Rules, Blogs, and Blog Posts. Be mindful that certain entities from your CSV, such as 'Product Manufacturers,' 'Invoices,' 'Taxes,' or 'Stores,' may not have direct equivalents in Shopify for automated transfer and might require manual mapping to product tags or re-configuration within Shopify's admin panel.

Step 5: Configure Additional Options & Data Mapping

To further customize your migration and ensure data integrity, you'll configure additional options and map your data fields.

Explore the 'Additional Options' to enhance your data transfer. Key options for Shopify include:

  • Clear Target Store: Opt to clear current data on the Target store before migration, useful for starting with a fresh slate.
  • Preserve Order IDs: Choose to preserve original order IDs, crucial for historical data consistency.
  • Migrate Images in Description: Ensure product images embedded in descriptions are transferred.
  • Create 301 SEO URLs: This is vital for maintaining your SEO rankings and link equity. Implementing 301 redirects ensures old URLs point to new ones, preventing broken links.
  • Migrate All Categories: Consolidate and transfer all your product categories.
  • Migrate Groups to Tags: Map customer groups or other categorizations from your source to Shopify's tagging system.

On the 'Mapping Setup' screen, you'll align specific data fields from your modified eCommerce CSV files with corresponding fields in Shopify. This is particularly important for customer groups and order statuses.

Carefully map customer groups (e.g., 'Wholesale' to a Shopify customer tag) and order statuses (e.g., 'Pending payment' to 'Pending'). This ensures consistency and proper categorization of your customer and order data post-migration.

Step 6: Run a Free Demo Migration

Before committing to a full migration, performing a free demo migration is highly recommended. This allows you to transfer a limited number of entities (e.g., 10 products, 10 customers, 10 orders) to your Shopify store.

A demo migration serves as a crucial test run, allowing you to:

  • Verify Data Integrity: Check if products, images, customer details, and order information are transferred correctly.
  • Assess Compatibility: Confirm that the migration process works as expected for your specific dataset.
  • Identify & Resolve Issues: Address any potential mapping errors or data inconsistencies before the full transfer.

This step is invaluable for ensuring a smooth full migration. For a more tailored experience, consider our Migration Preview Service.

Step 7: Launch Your Full Migration

Once you're satisfied with the results of your demo migration, you're ready to launch the full data transfer to Shopify.

Review the final migration details and consider selecting a Migration Insurance Plan. This optional service provides a set number of remigrations for a specified period, offering peace of mind. For an in-depth understanding of how it works, see How Migration Insurance works? After confirming your selections, initiate the full migration. Depending on the volume of your data, this process can take some time. You can monitor its progress through the wizard. In case new data accumulates on your modified eCommerce store after the initial migration, our Recent Data Migration Service can help transfer those new entities.

Post-Migration Steps

After your data has successfully transferred to Shopify, several crucial steps are needed to finalize your store and ensure a seamless launch.

  • Thorough Data Verification:
    • Products: Check product descriptions, images, prices, SKUs, and variants. Ensure all product data appears as expected.
    • Customers: Verify customer accounts and their associated order history.
    • Orders: Confirm that all historical orders are present with correct statuses and details. Note that for Shopify, the fulfilled date for orders will be updated during the migration if specified. Refer to What will be the Fulfilled date on Shopify target store? for more information.
    • Reviews: If migrating reviews, ensure they are correctly displayed via your chosen Shopify review app (e.g., AirReviews).
    • CMS Pages & Blog Posts: Check static content and blog articles for proper formatting and imagery.
  • Configure Shopify Store Settings:
    • Payment Gateways: Set up your preferred payment processors.
    • Shipping: Configure shipping rates and zones. Be aware of potential country restrictions for orders on Shopify.
    • Taxes: Ensure multi-tax settings are correctly configured, as Shopify allows this flexibility.
    • Theme & Branding: Customize your Shopify theme to match your brand identity and ensure a compelling user experience.
    • Install Essential Apps: Explore the Shopify App Store for apps that extend functionality, such as marketing, analytics, accounting, and more.
  • SEO Optimization & Redirects:
    • 301 Redirects: Double-check that all 301 redirects are properly implemented and functional, particularly for critical product and category pages, to preserve SEO rankings and link equity.
    • Google Search Console: Update your sitemap and inform Google of your site's new location.
    • Monitor SEO: Keep an eye on your search engine rankings and traffic after the migration.
  • Comprehensive Testing:
    • Place Test Orders: Conduct multiple test purchases using various payment methods.
    • Customer Registration: Test the customer registration and login process.
    • Form Submissions: Verify contact forms and other interactive elements.
    • Mobile Responsiveness: Ensure your new Shopify store is fully responsive and offers an excellent experience across all devices.
  • Go Live:
    • Update DNS: Once confident, update your domain's DNS settings to point to your new Shopify store.
    • Remove Password Protection: Disable any password protection on your Shopify storefront.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
