Migrating from digiSHOP to Shopify: Your Definitive Guide for a Seamless E-commerce Transition

A Comprehensive Guide to Transitioning from digiSHOP to Shopify

Embarking on an e-commerce platform migration is a significant undertaking, but the benefits of moving to a robust, scalable solution like Shopify can revolutionize your online business. This guide provides a clear, step-by-step pathway for merchants looking to transfer their existing digiSHOP store data to Shopify, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition.

While digiSHOP offers a foundational e-commerce experience, Shopify provides advanced features, extensive app integrations, and a user-friendly interface that empowers merchants to grow. Given that direct API connections for digiSHOP are not universally available, this migration will leverage the highly effective CSV file export and import method, coupled with the power of a specialized migration tool like Cart2Cart, to facilitate the data transfer process.

    Prerequisites for a Successful Migration

Before initiating your data transfer, it's crucial to prepare both your existing digiSHOP store and your new Shopify platform. Proper preparation minimizes potential disruptions and ensures data integrity.

    • For Your digiSHOP Store (Source)
      • Data Export: Prepare to export all your essential store data. This includes products (with SKUs, variants, images, descriptions), product categories, customer records, order history, product reviews, CMS pages, blogs, and coupons, into well-structured CSV files.
      • Data Review: Thoroughly review your exported CSV files for accuracy and consistency. Clean up any redundant or outdated information to ensure only high-quality data is moved to Shopify.
      • Backup: Always create a complete backup of your digiSHOP store's database and files. This is a critical safeguard in case any unforeseen issues arise during the data transfer. For detailed guidance, consult our FAQ on preparing your Source store.
    • For Your Shopify Store (Target)
      • Shopify Account Setup: Ensure you have an active Shopify store. Choose a plan that suits your business needs. Be aware that a "Pause and Build" plan on Shopify will block new orders, so plan your migration timing accordingly.
      • Install Cart2Cart App: The migration process to Shopify typically requires the installation of a dedicated migration app. Search for the "Cart2Cart Store Migration App" in the Shopify App Store and install it.
      • Disable Notifications: To prevent customers from receiving emails about changes during the migration, it is highly recommended to disable email notifications within your Shopify admin settings temporarily.
      • Prepare for Reviews: If you intend to migrate customer reviews, please note that Shopify requires a specific app, such as the AirReviews app, to manage and display them. Ensure you have this or a similar app ready post-migration.
      • Consider API Credentials: While the Cart2Cart app streamlines connection, for specific scenarios, you might need API access credentials. Review our guide on Access Credentials if you opt for this method.
      • Clear Target Data (Optional): If your Shopify store already contains sample data, you might consider the "Clear Target" option during migration. Learn more about clearing target data.

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

With your preparations complete, you are ready to initiate the data transfer from digiSHOP to Shopify using the Cart2Cart migration wizard. This section guides you through each step of the process.

    Step 1: Start Your Migration

Navigate to the Cart2Cart website. You'll be presented with options to start your migration. Choose the self-service migration wizard to begin the automated process.

Step 2: Connect Your digiSHOP Store (Source Setup)

In the migration wizard, the first crucial step is to connect your source digiSHOP store. Since digiSHOP is not directly listed for API connection, you will select "CSV File to Cart" as your source platform from the dropdown menu. You will then upload your prepared CSV files containing all your digiSHOP data.

Step 3: Connect Your Shopify Store (Target Setup)

Next, configure your target Shopify store. From the dropdown list, select "Shopify" as your new e-commerce platform. The recommended and simplest connection method is to install the Cart2Cart app directly from the Shopify App Store. Click the provided link, follow the on-screen instructions on Shopify to install the app, and then return to the migration wizard.

Step 4: Select Data Entities for Transfer

This step allows you to choose which specific types of data you wish to transfer from your digiSHOP CSV files to Shopify. You can select all available entities or pick and choose based on your needs. Commonly migrated entities include:

    • Products (including SKUs, variants, descriptions, images)
    • Product Categories
    • Customers
    • Orders
    • Product Reviews (note: requires an app like AirReviews on Shopify)
    • CMS Pages
    • Blogs & Blog Posts
    • Coupons

Step 5: Data Mapping and Additional Migration Options

This is a critical stage where you ensure your data translates correctly to Shopify. The wizard will present options for data mapping, allowing you to match customer groups, order statuses, and other custom fields from your digiSHOP CSVs to their equivalents in Shopify.

You will also find a range of additional options to tailor your migration:

    • Preserve Order IDs: This option helps maintain continuity for your records. Learn more about how Preserve IDs options work.
    • SEO URLs: Crucial for maintaining your search engine rankings and link equity. This option helps create 301 redirects from your old digiSHOP URLs to the new Shopify ones, preventing broken links.
    • Migrate Images in Description: Ensures that all product images embedded within descriptions are transferred.
    • Password Migration: Allows existing customer passwords to be migrated securely.
    • Clear Target Store Data: If your Shopify store has existing data you want to remove before migration.

Step 6: Initiate Demo or Full Migration

Before committing to a full migration, we highly recommend running a Free Demo Migration. This allows you to transfer a limited number of entities (e.g., 10-15 products, customers, orders) to your Shopify store, enabling you to verify the data integrity and accuracy of the migration process. Once you are satisfied with the demo results, you can proceed with the Full Migration.

You can also consider adding Migration Insurance at this stage, which offers a set number of remigrations within a specific period, providing peace of mind. Find out how Migration Insurance works.

    Post-Migration Steps

Once the data transfer is complete, there are several essential steps to ensure your new Shopify store is fully operational, optimized, and ready for customers.

    1. Thorough Data Verification: Carefully review all migrated data on your Shopify store.
      • Check product listings: Verify SKUs, variants, prices, images, and descriptions.
      • Review customer accounts: Ensure customer data, order history, and (if migrated) passwords are correct.
      • Examine orders: Confirm all order details, statuses, and associated customer information.
      • Verify CMS pages and blog posts: Check content, formatting, and internal links.
      • Ensure product reviews are displayed correctly via your chosen reviews app (e.g., AirReviews).
    2. Configure Your Shopify Store: Set up essential store functionalities that aren't data-related.
      • Theme Customization: Customize your Shopify theme to match your brand's aesthetics.
      • Payment Gateways: Configure your preferred payment methods (e.g., Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe).
      • Shipping Settings: Set up shipping zones, rates, and carriers.
      • App Integration: Install any additional Shopify apps required for your business operations (e.g., marketing, inventory, customer service).
      • Update Policies: Ensure your privacy policy, refund policy, and terms of service are updated.
    3. SEO Optimization & Redirection Check:
      • Verify 301 Redirects: Crucial for maintaining your SEO rankings and link equity. Test a sample of old digiSHOP URLs to ensure they correctly redirect to their new Shopify counterparts.
      • Update Sitemaps: Submit your new Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console.
      • Monitor Performance: Keep an eye on your search engine rankings and website traffic after the transition.
    4. Update DNS Settings: Point your domain name to your new Shopify store. This is the final step to making your Shopify store live under your existing domain.
    5. Test Everything: Before officially launching, perform comprehensive testing.
      • Place test orders from a customer perspective.
      • Register new customer accounts and test existing logins.
      • Test all contact forms, search functionality, and navigation.
    6. Go Live & Monitor: Once all checks are complete, confidently launch your Shopify store! Continue to monitor performance, sales, and user experience closely.
    7. Consider Recent Data Migration: If you accumulated new data (orders, customers) on your digiSHOP store during the migration period, consider using the Recent Data Migration Service to transfer this latest information.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

I feel much more confident now with my decision to use Cart2Cart to do the data migration from my existing website to Shopify. I was recommended to Cart2Cart for Shopify Migration by a trusted friend and I will definitely recommend them also to anyone looking to migrate. I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
