Migrate Your HHG multistore to Shopify: The Ultimate 2025 Guide

Seamlessly Transition Your E-commerce Store: HHG multistore to Shopify Migration

Embarking on an e-commerce platform migration is a pivotal step for any growing online business. Moving from HHG multistore to Shopify can unlock significant opportunities for scalability, enhanced features, and an improved user experience. While the process of replatforming might seem daunting, this comprehensive guide will walk you through every stage of transferring your valuable store data, ensuring a smooth and successful transition.

Our focus here is on leveraging an automated migration tool, which significantly reduces the complexity and potential for errors often associated with manual data transfers. By following these clear, actionable steps, you’ll be well-equipped to move your products, customers, orders, and other critical store information to your new Shopify environment with confidence and precision.

Prerequisites for a Successful Migration

Before initiating the data transfer from HHG multistore to Shopify, certain preparations are essential to ensure a seamless and efficient process. Taking these steps will help minimize potential issues and pave the way for a successful replatforming project.

Preparing Your HHG multistore (Source Store)

  • Full Data Backup: Always create a complete backup of your HHG multistore database and files. This is a critical safeguard, providing peace of mind in case any unforeseen issues arise during the data transfer.
  • Access Credentials: Ensure you have full administrative access to your HHG multistore, including FTP/SFTP access to upload the necessary connection bridge. The connection method for HHG multistore is 'Bridge only', requiring specific connection fields such as adminLogin, adminPwd, adminUrl, url, and bridgeLocation. For more details, refer to The Short & Essential Guide to Access Credentials for Cart2Cart.
  • Install Plugin: The HHG multistore platform requires the "Cart2Cart HHG Multistore Migration module" to facilitate the connection. Make sure this module is installed on your source store.
  • Review Limitations: Be aware of specific limitations such as "Multi-store limitations for BigCommerce variants" and "SEO options excluded for blogs" as noted for HHG multistore.
  • Pre-migration Cleanup: Consider cleaning up unnecessary data, such as old product entries, inactive customer accounts, or obsolete orders, to streamline the migration process.
  • For a more detailed guide, check our How to prepare Source store for migration? FAQ.

Preparing Your Shopify (Target Store)

  • Set Up a New Shopify Store: Create a new Shopify store, even a trial version. This will be the destination for all your migrated data.
  • Install Cart2Cart App: For Shopify, the recommended connection method is via the "Cart2Cart Store Migration App". This app needs to be installed directly from the Shopify App Store onto your new store.
  • Disable Notifications: It is highly recommended to "Disable notifications" on your Shopify store during the migration period to prevent customers from receiving emails about new orders or accounts while data is being imported.
  • Understand Limitations: Note that the "Pause and Build plan blocks orders" on Shopify, and "Reviews require AirReviews app" or a similar app post-migration if you intend to display migrated customer reviews.
  • HTTPS Only: Shopify strictly operates on HTTPS, ensuring secure data transfer.
  • For comprehensive preparation steps, visit our How to prepare Target store for migration? guide.

Performing the Migration: A Step-by-Step Guide

With your preparations complete, you are ready to begin the automated data transfer using a migration tool.

Step 1: Initiate Your Migration

Begin by navigating to the migration service platform. This is where you'll start configuring your source and target store connections.

Step 2: Connect Your HHG multistore Store (Source Setup)

First, specify HHG multistore as your source e-commerce platform from the dropdown menu. Since HHG multistore uses a 'Bridge only' connection method, you will need to:

  1. Download the Cart2Cart connection bridge file.
  2. Upload this file via FTP/SFTP to the root directory of your HHG multistore installation. This bridge acts as a secure gateway, allowing the migration tool to access your store's data.
  3. Once uploaded, paste your HHG multistore URL into the designated field. The system will then verify the bridge connection.

Step 3: Connect Your Shopify Store (Target Setup)

Next, select Shopify as your target platform. For a seamless connection, the recommended method is to install the dedicated migration app:

  1. Choose the "Install App from Marketplace" option.
  2. Click the provided link to be redirected to the Shopify App Store.
  3. Install the "Cart2Cart Store Migration App" on your Shopify store.
  4. Return to the migration wizard, and the connection will be established automatically.

Alternatively, you can provide API access credentials (apiPassword) if you prefer, but the app method is generally simpler and recommended for most users.

Step 4: Select Data Entities for Transfer

This crucial step allows you to choose exactly what data you wish to transfer from HHG multistore to Shopify. The migration tool supports a wide range of entities:

  • Products: Including SKUs, descriptions, images, variants, attributes.
  • Product Categories & Manufacturers: For maintaining your store’s structure.
  • Customers: Customer data, accounts, and associated information.
  • Orders: Complete order history, statuses, and details.
  • Products Reviews: Customer feedback on your products.
  • CMS Pages & Blogs: Important for content and SEO.
  • Coupons & Gift Cards: For marketing and customer loyalty.
  • Invoices & Taxes: Essential for financial records.
  • Stores & Price Rules: For complex multi-store setups and promotions.

You can choose to migrate all entities or select specific ones based on your business requirements. For instance, HHG multistore supports migrating Products, Products_Categories, Products_Manufacturers, Products_Reviews, Customers, Orders, Invoices, Taxes, Stores, Coupons, and CMS_Pages.

Step 5: Configure Additional Options & Data Mapping

This stage is vital for fine-tuning your data transfer, ensuring data integrity and preserving important aspects like SEO rankings and customer relationships.

Additional Options:

Select from a range of optional features to tailor your migration:

  • Preserve IDs: Opt to Preserve Product IDs, Preserve Category IDs, Preserve Orders IDs, and Preserve Customers IDs. This is highly recommended for maintaining internal references and SEO.
  • SEO URLs & 301 Redirects: Choose to "Create 301 SEO URLs" to automatically redirect old HHG multistore URLs to their new Shopify counterparts. This is critical for maintaining your search engine rankings and preventing broken links.
  • Migrate Images in Description: Ensure that all product images embedded within descriptions are transferred.
  • Clear Target Store Data: The "Clear Target" option allows you to clear all existing data on your Shopify store before the migration. Use this with caution, typically for fresh Shopify installations.
  • Password Migration: Migrate customer passwords to ensure a smooth login experience post-migration.
  • Create Variants from Attributes: Utilize this HHG multistore source option to correctly transfer product variations (e.g., size, color).
  • Migrate Groups to Tags: This is a useful option for transferring customer groups from HHG multistore and mapping them to Shopify's tagging system for customer segmentation.
  • Multi-tax Support: Both HHG multistore and Shopify allow multi-tax configurations, which can be migrated.

Data Mapping:

Here, you will match specific fields from your HHG multistore to their equivalents in Shopify. This typically involves:

  • Customer Groups Mapping: Associate customer groups from HHG multistore (e.g., "Wholesale", "Retail") with corresponding Shopify customer tags or segments.
  • Order Status Mapping: Map HHG multistore order statuses (e.g., "Pending", "Processing", "Shipped") to Shopify's equivalent order states.

This process ensures that customer data and order history retain their logical structure in the new platform.

Step 6: Run a Free Demo Migration

Before committing to a full data transfer, execute a free demo migration. This allows you to migrate a limited number of entities (e.g., 10-20 products, customers, and orders) to your Shopify store.

The demo migration serves several critical purposes:

  • Data Integrity Check: Verify that your data, including SKUs, product variants, customer information, and order details, is transferred accurately.
  • Process Verification: Ensure that the migration tool is correctly interpreting and moving your HHG multistore data to Shopify.
  • Mapping Validation: Confirm that your chosen data mapping and additional options are functioning as expected.

Review the demo results thoroughly on your Shopify store. This step is invaluable for identifying and resolving any potential issues before the full migration.

Step 7: Full Data Migration

Once you are satisfied with the demo results and have made any necessary adjustments, you can proceed with the full data transfer. Review the final details, including the total entities to be migrated and the cost, then initiate the full migration.

Consider adding a Migration Insurance Service, which often includes a set number of re-migrations or extended support, offering greater peace of mind during this critical phase.

Post-Migration Steps: Securing Your New Shopify Store

Completing the data transfer is a major milestone, but the journey doesn't end there. Several crucial post-migration steps are necessary to ensure your new Shopify store is fully optimized, functional, and ready to welcome customers.

  • Thoroughly Review Your Shopify Store:
    • Products: Check product pages, descriptions, images, pricing, SKUs, and stock levels. Ensure variants and categories are correctly displayed.
    • Customers: Verify customer accounts, login functionality, and order history.
    • Orders: Confirm that all order details, statuses, and associated data have been accurately transferred.
    • CMS Pages & Blogs: Review content pages and blog posts for formatting, links, and image integrity.
    • Taxes & Pricing: Double-check that all tax settings and product pricing are correct for your regions.
  • Configure Shipping and Payment Gateways: Set up your preferred payment providers (e.g., Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe) and configure all shipping zones, rates, and methods in your Shopify admin.
  • Install Essential Apps: Shopify's strength lies in its App Store. Install any necessary apps for reviews (e.g., the AirReviews app, as customer reviews often require a dedicated app post-migration), marketing, SEO, customer service, and analytics that you used on HHG multistore or want to add to your new store.
  • Set Up 301 Redirects: While the migration tool offers to create 301 redirects, it's wise to manually verify or add any additional redirects for pages that may have changed URLs. This is crucial for preserving your SEO rankings and link equity.
  • Update DNS Records: Once you are completely satisfied with your new Shopify store, update your domain's DNS records to point to Shopify. Plan this step carefully to minimize downtime for your customers.
  • Announce Your New Store: Inform your customers about the transition via email, social media, and on-site announcements. Highlight the benefits of your new, improved store experience.
  • Consider Ongoing Services: If you continue to receive new orders or customer registrations on your old HHG multistore during the migration window, consider utilizing a Recent Data Migration Service to transfer only the latest changes, ensuring no data is lost.

By diligently completing these post-migration tasks, you'll establish a robust, fully functional, and optimized Shopify store ready to support your business growth. If you encounter any challenges, remember to consult our Frequently Asked Questions or Contact Us for expert assistance.

This Shopify Migration App worked great to migrate our store from Volusion to Shopify! It transferred over all product descriptions, photos, categories, etc. seamlessly. It’s very easy to use, and the instructions are very easy to follow. Considering the amount of information that we needed transferred, it did not take as long as we had expected.

We did an initial transfer to test out how things would look and how everything would function. It worked great! We purchased insurance with our migration so that we could re-migrate once our shop was closer to being ready to push live, and customer service has been AMAZING in our requests necessary with our remigration. They are very responsive, very informative, and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this service if you are looking to transfer your eCommerce site. Everything has been great! Thank you!

Moving website providers has been a source of stress for me and at least this is one less thing to worry about.

I had a great experience with Cart2Cart. Reading some of the negative reviews here says more about how complex ecommerce migration is than anything else. I will say that I highly recommend paying the extra $ for their assisted service, which I did. It is totally work the extra $200 or $300 because you get a project manager who is very available, and you get to tweak your migration settings to make sure everything is just right. With the automated tools they offer, you’re on your own. But their customer support on my project was fast and responsive to my questions, and they were able to make any adjustments I needed. I migrated from Virtuemart to Shopify with over 12,000 orders and 4,000 customers. The migration was smooth. They scheduled the last “new data” import for me at a time I chose (within their working hours). And the migration was a success.

Fantastic App. We migrated from Volusion to Shopify with no problems. Customer Accounts, Inventory, Sales Orders…everything was transferred over.

The only quirk we had was that passwords didn’t transfer over (I’m sure this is a security issue and I have no problem with it at all). The solution was to just send out a mass e-mail to all of our customers asking them to reset their password. Once they reset their password they would still have their shipping information saved as well as the list of their previous orders.

WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP…but like any migration process be sure you research & make sure you are doing it the correct way so there are no issues. You can’t blame a vendor for a user mistake 🙂

We migrated a large x-cart site to shopify. This was the only app that could help us migrate hundreds of thousands of orders and customers. They were extremely knowledgeable and responsive. They answered my questions quickly and accurately. The initial migration went smoothly with no errors. The final migration at launch (to bring in the newest orders and customers) went equally as well. Data security was also handled to my satisfaction. Definitely would recommend this app.
