Insights & Trends

March 2026 confirmed several compelling trends in the e-commerce migration space. We observed a total of 241 real migrations this month, excluding test cases, underscoring the continuous evolution of online businesses.

  1. Shopify's Unyielding Gravitational Pull: Shopify remains the undeniable leader as a target platform, attracting 103 migrations this month. The migration path from WooCommerce to Shopify accounted for a substantial 56 migrations, highlighting a sustained drive for merchants to leverage Shopify's robust ecosystem.
  2. The Replatforming Imperative for Established Brands: A significant portion of migrations, approximately 46%, originated from mature stores (8+ years old), including several over 15 years old. This trend signals a 'Great Replatforming' among seasoned businesses seeking to modernize legacy systems, improve performance, and adopt more flexible platforms to meet contemporary market demands.
  3. Surge in High-Volume Migrations: March saw an elevated number of migrations involving substantial data volumes. The largest single migration processed an impressive 541,897 data entities from WooCommerce to Shopify, closely followed by a Magento to Shopify transfer of 267,626 entities. This indicates that even large, complex enterprises are actively pursuing platform transitions, suggesting increased confidence in migration services and the perceived benefits of target platforms.
  4. Wix as a Growing Migration Source: Migrations from Wix to Shopify were notably prevalent, with 20 stores making this transition. This suggests that businesses initially built on simpler, entry-level platforms are now scaling up and requiring more advanced e-commerce functionalities offered by platforms like Shopify.
  5. Strategic Internal Platform Optimization: We also tracked 10 internal migrations (e.g., Shopify to Shopify, WooCommerce to WooCommerce). These moves often reflect businesses consolidating multiple stores, upgrading to newer platform versions, or reorganizing their e-commerce infrastructure for greater efficiency, rather than a complete platform change.
  6. Diversification in Exit Strategies: While many migrate to another e-commerce platform, 9 migrations were directed to CSV files, indicating a strategic choice by some merchants to extract their data for custom development, archival purposes, or to prepare for highly specialized new platforms.

Predictions:

  • Given the recent innovations in Shopify, particularly its international pricing and customizable checkout features, we predict a further acceleration of migrations to this platform in Q2, especially from mid-market to enterprise-level businesses seeking global expansion.
  • PrestaShop's new 9.1 release, while bringing performance enhancements, is unlikely to reverse the trend of businesses migrating away from it to more agile, cloud-based solutions, but may stabilize its existing user base who are content with its feature set for localized operations.
  • The growing complexity and data volume of migrations will necessitate more advanced tooling and expert support, prompting a rise in demand for tailored migration solutions that can handle intricate data structures and minimize downtime for large-scale operations.
